Ukrainian Record

This being the first release of the Radomski Ensemble in a long playing record, and anticipating a distribution of this record beyond the boundaries of Alberta, into other provinces where thousands of Canadians of Ukrainian origin reside, I have taken the liberty of including a photograph of a memorial which was erected at the Alberta Elk Island park some thirty miles east of Edmonton. This memorial which was erected in the summer of 1963 shall serve the purpose of reminding the younger
generation of the hardships and toils the pioneers assumed in order that the future generations reap the benefits of this new and better land. No doubt many of the thousands of poverty stricken and oppressed Ukrainian peasants who left their native land and came at Canada s invitation to help develop her vast natural resources, had intended to stay in this country only long enough to make a small fortune and return to their native villages. However, the comparatively favourable circumstances here, in contrast to the oppressive foreign subjugation of Ukrainian lands by historical enemies, dispelled the hopes that many had entertained of returning to Europe. With their children growing up in Canada, they fully realized that they were better off in almost every respect in this
country than were their kinsmen in the Ukraine.

In only seventy odd years the Ukrainian Canadians, have not only witnessed but were a part of the greatest transformation in history, from an ox to a tractor, from illiteracy to the highest positions in politics, industry and commerce. Some of the technical advancements have created new problems but I doubt whether any memorial regardless of size can fully symbolize the appreciation of the Ukrainian Canadians in matters of economic justice and opportunity, freedom of assembly, of spoken and printed word, of action, and religious worship, as well as freedom to cultivate their own culture. Now that we are on the subject of transformation I should perhaps mention the great change of social tolerance. Having been brought up in an atmosphere of national and religious hatreds and class discrimination, the Ukrainians for many years perpetuated acts of intolerance in Canada. In time however, they gradually learned the Canadian practice of the golden rule, of actins towards others as they would want others to act towards them.
Space does not, permit me to go into detail pointing out merits symbolized in this memorial but I do want to bring; to the attention of the Ukrainian Canadians in other parts of Canada and U.S.A. that we in Alberta are not forgetting the pioneers. The music on this record is that of а man who has entertained the pioneers and the following generations and I might add that he is very active to this very day.

To thousands of city and country folks in northern Alberta the name Radomski is associated with the fiddle and a Ukrainian wedding. It is with great pleasure that I accepted the opportunity to introduce Metro Radomski to those in possession of this long play record, living outside the province of Alberta. In some respects Metro Radomski can be compared with Jack Benny, especially when it comes to age and his ability to entertain. Although Metro doesn't look a day over 45, he claims to have played at weddings for couples who are today receiving old age pension. It has been said by many who heard Metro Radomski on stage or radio that within this man exists a complete collection of feelings and moods of Ukrainian Canadians in Alberta which be can express at will, through his fiddle and bow. he two principle instruments used are fiddle, played by Metro Radomski, and dulsimer played by Bill Malayko. The fact that the fiddler is getting up in age even though he doesn't admit it, the following gentlemen have offered to provide the background music and for their efforts I extend to them my sincere thanks. Nestor Worobets on the trumpet, John Waschuk on the base,Eugene Warawa on the" guitar. Henry Brody and George Danyluk on drums. Ken Radomski on the saxaphone and yours truly at the piano. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Stephen Leskiw who recorded the music.
On behalf of Metro Radomski and all the other members of the band I wish you all many hours of pheasant listening and sincerely hope that this record will encourage other orchestral and choral groups to follow suit so that future generations could retain a link with their predecessors.

Whether you see them placing forth their music or not is immaterial, because before long the entire band is "jumping" in your living room.

1. Весілля в Галичині - Весілля і даровання
   A wedding in Galicia is the same ritual as a wedding in Ukraine, but with different words and melodies.  It might be a bit more primitive and very sentimental.  The bride groom is blessed by his parents; wishing him a lucky life, rich as the earth, healthy as the water and beautiful as the sun.
2. Хрестини Christening
   Baby's christening last only one day, but it is celebrated with hundreds of songs and dances.  Mother wants to call the baby Hryc (Harry), Father wants it to be named Ivan (John).  As usual, they compromise and the boy is named Hryc.  Humeniuk puts a lot of snappy music in this record.
3. Коломийка - Popular dance

1. Заручини - Engagement 
   This custom is, that, if a girl accepts the proposal, she hangs an embroidered cloth on the young man's belt.  If she refuses, she gives him a big pumpkin.
2. Весілля
   This number was recorded by Paul Humeniuk with his group in 1930 with tremendous success.  It was the first record of its kind.  It was in great demand not only by Ukrainians but by many different nationals.
3. Поправини - The party after the wedding
   ... sometimes last another week.  Mostly older people attend.  They sing: "Don't go for mushrooms now, or make love in the fall, when the mushrooms grow".
4. Вінкоплетини - Wreath weaving 
   The girls do that before the wedding and sing: "May you live as many years as the wreath has leaves".

   a lively dance, called Kolomeyka

These Ukrainian Weddings are brought to you with the flavor of the old country.  During the wedding the words and music are improvised, but in general, the theme remains the same.  The weddings are played by the famous string instrument maker Paulo Humeniuk (Homenick).  Hi is assisted by numerous Ukrainian folk singers and stage performers.  Among them is Eugene Zokowsky and Rose Krasnowska.  They portray the main characters in the wedding scene.
For hundreds of years, Ukrainian peasants have made huge ceremonies of their weddings.  Usually, the festivities lasted 3 days, but sometimes they continued for two weeks.  These weddings are storehouses of rich melodies.
On this record we have two weddings.  One by Homeniuk and the other a Galician Wedding by Eugene Zukowsky and his group.  Listen to them and notice the improvisation and spontaneous harmony.


Отсі українські весілля відбуваються так, як колись у нас дома.  Весільна розмова і музика є імпровізовані, але в загальному основа та сама.  Українські Весілля є відіграні Павлом Гуменюком, славним творцем струнних інструментів.  З ним виступають численні народні солісти і артисти.  Одним із них є Євен Жуковський і Роза Красновська.  Вони відіграють головні ролі у представленні весілля.
Стіліттями весілля на Україні була велика подія.  Святкування тривало найменше три дні, а нераз протягнулося і два тижні.  Українське Весілля - це надзвичайна збірка чудових мельодій.
На нашій платівці ми подаємо два весілля.  Одне весілля представлене Гуменюком, а друге Галицьке Весілля представляє Євген Жуковський зі своєю групою.  Слухайте їх імпровізації Українського весілля і насолоджуйтеся чудовими мельодіями.

Of all the countries and regions in the world, the Ukraine is probably the richest in folklore, folk songs and music.  Many of the still-popular songs have been handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth and now are being passed on to future generations through the miracle of electronic recording.  Even though the Ukraine, as a nation, no longer exists, songs and dances are still being composed and so the cultural background of the Ukraine continues to flourish wherever Ukrainians live.

John Gotch is of Polish and Ukrainian descent and is thoroughly versed in Ukrainian music.  He has compiled this album of songs and dances of the Ukraine, some of them old and some new, and throughout them all, he has used the modern approach to orchestrations and instrumentation while retaining the old world charm essential to this type of music.
The brilliance of his arrangements is enhanced by the singing of Oksana Bluy, Luba Horsky and Vera Iwashako, a charming trio of girls all with extensive training at the Conservatory.

When Arc Records called upon John Gotch to organize the musicians and singers heard on this long play record, they soon found they had selected the right man for the task.
John is of Ukrainian and Polish descent, and his musical career began at an early age.  His first instrument was the violin, and later on he changed to the clarinet and saxophone.  John has had extensive training in harmony and composition with some of the most prominent teachers in the country.
In addition, John called upon other well-known musicians to assist him in the making of this recording, such as Victor Passowisty, violinist, and Bill Mankiss, accordionist.
The Songs heard on this record are authentic Ukrainian melodies, played by top artists under the direction of John Gotch.  Vocals are by John, accompanied by the popular and talented "Werchowina Trio".
