THE BANDURA
The
bandura is a 50 to 60 stringed non-fretted instrument, played with the
fingers of both hands, and has a range of about five and a half octaves.
Its sound somewhat resembles a combination of the harp, lute and
celesta. The bandura's origins are lost in antiquity, but historical
records mention the bandura as far back as 800 years ago. The bandura is
the national instrument of Ukraine, and is to Ukrainians what the
bagpipes are to the Scots. The bandura is a symbol of longing, sadness,
triumph, beauty, rejoicing — in short, of every aspect of a country that
can be expressed in music.
THE ENSEMBLE
The
best young bandura players from all over North America gathered in
Detroit to meet with each other, to play the bandura, and to make this
recording. This is not an ensemble (although many ensembles of many
cities are represented),this is a collection of enthusiasts. They are
all excellent instrumentalists and vocalists, but best of all, they
possess a love for their instrument and for the music of their country.
This will be self-evident to anyone hearing their songs.
Every
summer the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus organizes and sponsors music
camps and bandura workshops. All of these bandurists either learned how
to play at such a camp, or else developed their proficiency there. It is
also at these camps that these lovers of the bandura got to know one
another, and to share their enthusiasm for music and for the bandura. So
when it was proposed that they meet over Christmas vacation, forty-two
of them gave up their vacations, traveled long distances, and pooled
their money to make this recording — a gift to you.
Who
are these people? They are mostly students, or just out of school,
ranging in age from 15 to 24. A few are studying music, the rest are
pursuing a whole range of interests from art to medicine. They are
united only through the bandura and their Ukrainian heritage. They come
from Detroit, New York, Winnipeg, Toronto, Windsor, Cleveland, St.
Catharines, Washington D.C., Syracuse, Baltimore, Col¬umbus, and San
Diego. To maintain contact among these widely separated cities, an
organization of bandura players was formed in 1982, the Society of
Ukrainian Ban¬durists. This record is one of their first projects.
The
conductor is Hryhory Kytasty, conductor of the Ukrainian Bandurist
Chorus for over 40 years, whose name has achieved legendary status in
connection with his work with the bandura. He has been actively involved
in teaching many of the participants, as well as countless others. He
is considered the leader, almost a god-father figure so to speak, of the
bandura world.

Side 1 1. Hamaliya: Ukraine's poet laureate, Taras Shevchenko, wrote the words many years ago. Recently, Dmytro Moshniaha composed the music for this lively Cossack story. 2. Kobzar: Another Shevchenko "classic" and again the beautiful blend of Moshniaha's music. 3. Oy Khmelu: Some say it was written in the times of a famous Ukrainian leader, Bohdan Khmelnycky, others that the song was known long before. All agree it is a stirring music. 4. Doshchyk: The theme is rain, the music is Moshniaha's and the orchestra is Sydney Lipton's. The result: marvelous! 5. Oy Dzhygune: The Kuban Cossacs bring a new flavour to an old humerous melody which used to rumble across the steppes. 6. Oy Ne Khody Hryciu: A tone poem of a young lass telling her beau not to go out of an evening - without her, that is. 7. Susidko: A traditional Ukrainian folk song describing the values of having a young and beautiful young neighbour. 8. Rushnychok: A Malyshko & Mayboroda melody extolling the pride and love for one's mother.
Side 2 1. Cheremshyna: Two teams combined their talents to produce this lovely Ukrainian ballad: the originators, Yurichuk & Mykhaluk, and the updated arrangements of Moshniaha and Kouzan. 2. Hey Ta Na Kubani: The Kuban Cossacks present Moshniaha's words and music which paint the picture f the exciting life in the Kuban region of Ukraine. 3. Hopak: Sydney Lipton's orchestra plays T. Demey's arrangement of a traditional Ukrainian dance - which Cossacks, at a certain time of the evening, invariably perform. 4. Oy Ty Divchyno: So beautiful was she that it took three talents to adequately describe her. One of Ukraine's greatest composers wrote the words and music: Kos-Anatolsky: Moshniaha's new arrangement for the Kuban Cossacks repertoire: the English lyrics by Camilla Chance. 5. Yikhaw Kozak Za Dunay Tells the touching story of a Cossack's parting promise to his beloved: "fear not, I shall return". Ah! but what a surprise he gets when he does return! 6. Diwus Ja Na Nebo, Oj Lopnuw Obruch, Diwka w Siniach Stojala: A trio of tunes whose tempi and meaning change in a lightening-quick manner. But the results are as refreshing as a spring rain shower. 7. Kalyna: Now the ORIGINAL version of a traditional Cossack song: recently made popular by a Welsh singer Mary Hopkins.
The Kuban Cossacks - On your steppes Kuban Cossacks
THE KUBAN COSSACKS are so harmonious a team that it is usully assumed they are indeed one family. Two of them, SASHKO and MYKOLA KOUMPAN, are in fact brothers, while the third, WASYL KOWALENKO (the group's director) is the countryman with whom they struck up instant friendship when they met at the Olympic Games in Australia, and decided to join forces. They were teenagers then, and now they are young men in the physical prime — and in the years since that historic meeting they have packed a prodigious amount of experience with travel in 21 countries to give over 8000 performances.
An Amsterdam "date" was the beginning of the boys’ meteoric rise to fame. It lead to a record-breaking season in that Mecca of British show business, Blackpool, followed by triumphs in Hollywood, Caracas, Toronto, Vancouver, Paris, Brussels, Cannes, Geneva, Madrid, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Durban, Capetown, and Monte Carlo where they gave a Royal Command Performance for Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, en route for London and the crowning success of a London Palladium season. They have starred in Chicago, featured on Broadway (N.Y.) and played for long seasons in the plushier places of Nevada and Texas. During their resident booking at the Tropicana in Las Vegas they notched up 1506 performances without a day off – truly remarkable feat of endurance, probably a world record.
Television has made many calls on the Cossacks: they been seem on the seductive screen 95 times in a score of countries. Now they have made their first LP record — a mini-recital of exciting "folk" music far removed from pop and including original items by their distinguished musical director, DMYTRO MOSHMAHA, who is responsible for the dynamic arrangements they use. Recently the Cossacks recruited three charming songstresses who lend vocal and visual ornamentation to some of the highlights of the performance and, of course, are heard on the LP, backing the boys with 36-piece orchestra.
It is some years since the Kuban Cossacks graduated to the status of international stardom and now, after a champagne success registered in all six continents, they have joined the elite coterie of artists capable of constituting an entire concert in themselves. That they are able to put on a complete show - richly varied and liberally spiced with humour - is high testimony to that polish and perfect timing which has come from tightly disciplined rehearsal and a constant striving for an ever better performance.
The initial talent - they are inspired singers, swordsmen, dancers, and instrumentalists - took fire from their national origins. Their roots are deep in the Ukraine, that region of wild steppes whose people cherish a fierce tradition of independence and reckless courage. Incidentally, their "Kuban" comes from the so-named part of the Ukraine where they and their cossack-forebears once lived. In their spectacular dancing whose seeming abandon conceals hundreds of hours of practice and a cruel discipline they reflect the unquenchable spirit of their people. Their songs echo gaiety but with the righth astringent seasoning of remembered combat: their instruments have that ageless undertone of the melancholy of ancient lands.

Білаш не нова в жанрі естрадної пісні, яку вона пропагує як розваговий і
педагогічний засіб. Будучи вчителькою в двомовній англо-українській
системі навчання в Вінніпезі. Люба використовує пісню для кращого
засвоєння мови і знайомлення учнів з українською культурою, яка, на її
думку, повинна не зберігатися, а розвиватися. В цьому їй допомагає не
тільки природне обдарування, але і формальна освіта в ділянці
українознаства, яку вона здобула на Манітобському університеті. Молода
співачка виступала в Канаді, США та Европі й дотепер видала дві платівки
“Вінок дитячих пісень.“ Платівку яку отут рекомендуємо, зовсім
відмінна від попередніх і текстом і музичним жанром. В цих піснях Люба
вкладає український мелос в осучаснену форму. Слова й музику написали
молоді вінніпезькі композитори й шанувальники поетичного слова, а
центральною є пісня присвячена Тисячоліттю хрещення України.Люба
Білаш належить до четвертого покоління канадських українців, але має
виняткове рідномовне сприймання ньюансів української мови, вроджене
відчуття ліризму і драматизму слова і вміння поєднувати ці якості з
композиторською інтерпретацією. В неї дзвінкий лірично-драматичний
тембр голосу, добра логічна й музично-настроєва дикція та своєрідна
ритміка музичної фрази. Ми вітаємо Любу з її гарним досягненням і радо

A new voice of tradition Luba
Bilash is not new to the popular music scene, which she propagates
through recreational and educational means. Being a schoolteacher in
the bilingual English-Ukrainian program in Winnipeg, Canada, Luba makes
use of song to facilitate the learning of the language an to acquaint
further pupils with the Ukrainian culture, which, in her opinion, should
not only be preserved, but further developed. Not only is she assisted
by her natural talent, by also by her formal education in the field of
Ukrainian studies, which she has completed at the University of
Manitoba. Our young singer has performed in Canada, USA and Europe, and
has to this time produced two records "Vinok ditochykh pisen" (A
Garland of Ukrainian Children's Songs). Her new record, which we are
recommending, is distinct from her earlier ones both in its content and
musical genre. In these songs Luba infuses Ukrainian melos in a
contemporary manner. The lyrics and music were written by young
Winnipeg composers and lyricists, and the focal point is a song
dedicated to the Millennium of Ukraine's acceptance of Christianity in
9888 A. D.Luba Bilas is a
Ukrainian Canadian of fourth generation, but she has an exceptionally
native command and perception of the nuances of the Ukrainian language, a
natural feeling for the lyrical and dramatic quality of the word and
the ability to unite these qualities with a composer's interpretation.
She has a lyrically dramatic timbre of voice, a logical and musically
poignant diction as well as a unique rhythm of the musical phrase.We
congratulate Luba on her success and highly recommend this record to
enthusiasts of Ukrainian music, which in her performance, has become a
refreshing addition to the existing treasury of Ukrainian musical

This is the magical musical voyage of Volodymyr - of you and I through the Zoloti Vorota - the legendary Golden Gates of Kievan Rus, the gateway to ancient Kiev.
Transcending time and space, it is the story of our eternal quest; the individual and collective search for our ancestral mould, our elusive raison-d'etre, by way of a celebral journey into a world of imagery that brings to life a century-old vision shared by Shevchenko and Ivasiuk.
For some, the search may end in a rekindled dream or in a feeling of inner tranquility - for others, the quest may lead to the discovery of an inspirational cornucopia.

Lida and Bohdan - Lidan...
They were born and raised oceans apart.
Lida Sajewych-Rydnyk is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has lived most of her young life in the Ukrainian community in Chicago. Bohdan Buchwak came to the United States a few years ago from Poland, from the area once populated by the Ukrainian Boyko and Lemko people. Thus, they brought to the duo their own experiences of growing up Ukrainian in different environments, of searching for and finding their roots. For both of them, a big part of that process - and what brought them together - was their love of Ukrainian music.
For the past sever years Lida and Bohdan have been performing at folk festivals and concerts in the Midwest. In the summer of 1984 they ventured east for a guest appearance at the Soyuzivka Ukrainian Resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. Recently, while continuing to perform as a duo, they have branched out to create a band.
This album - the Lidan duo's first - contains eleven songs, six from the rich lode of Ukrainian folk and contemporary music and five original compositions.
Виростали на протилежних кінцях світу, на вільній американській землі знайшли одне одного, і тут створили дует. Ліда Саєвич-Риндик народилась у Сполучених Штатх Америки, більшість свого життя прожила в Чікаґо, виховувалась в українських школах і молодіжній організації “Пласт“. Тут і прищепилась їй любов до української пісні, тут і в родинному колі. Богдан Бухвак народився в Сянові, у тій частині Польщі, куди було виселено тисячі українців з їхніх рідних земель.... Чотирилітнім хлопцем повернувся на ті землі, до Дверника над Сяном. Знає, що означає виростати на українських землях, приєднаних до чужої держави. Не відрікся свого, плекав своє. Емігрувавши недавно до Америки, у своїй пісні “Моя Надія“ пообіцяв “Ми вернемось до свого, що з діда-прадіда наше“. Українська громада Чікаґо добре знає дует „Лідан“ з його численних виступів на фестивалях, концертах, прийняттях. Був і виступ на „Союзівці“, влітку 1984 року. Через цю платівку, з унікальним стилем дуету, з чарівною милозвучністю його пісні, ознайомиться тепер і вся українська спільнота Вільного Світу. А може ця пісня і на Україну залетить? На платівці одинадцять пісень. Шість - це народні мелодії або пісні сучансих українських композиторів. А п’ять - це власні композиції Ліди і Богдана, в які вони влили і спогади про пережите - радісне і сумне - і надії на майбутнє. В усіх їх переплітається думка, що знайшла вислів в одному з рядків пісні „Оксамитний звук“: „Любов до рідного краю, плекаєм в серці піснею“
