The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus was organized in Kiev, capital of Ukraine in 1918, and dedicated to the memory of the great Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko. The ensemble combines two Ukrainian musical traditions: choral singing and the national instrument, the bandura. The bandura is a 50 to 60-stringed instrument, played with the fingers of both hands, and has a range of about five and a half octaves. Its sound resembles a combination of harp and lute and Is somewhat emphatic but gentle. In 1935, the Chorus was designated the "Ukrainian State Bandurist Chorus" and performed throughout Eastern Europe. During World War II, the Chorus joined the exodus of Ukrainians to the West. Immigrating to the United States in 1949 as a group, the Chorus has given constant performances in the leading concert halls of the United States and Canada. In 1958 It returned to Western Europe for a triumphant tour. Since 1962, the Chorus has regularly toured the U.S., Canada and In 1980 Australia — all to universal critical acclaim. By training a new generation of bandurists, the Chorus has ensured that Its unique musical art form will flourish in the West.

During the Christmas season, the Ukrainian countryside reverberates with the sounds of Kolladky and Shchodrlvky — the holiday songs. KOLIADKA Is a Christmas carol, religious In content, primarily sung on Christmas Eve to commemorate the birth of the Lord. SHCHEDRIVKA is a traditional chant stemming from pagan times. It is sung on New Year's Eve, wishing the master and his household good health, wealth and a plentiful harvest.

History The Ukrainian Catholic Women's League Chorus was first organized in 1960. This chorus has made many appearances on different occasions as part of its aim to preserve Ukrainian customs, traditions and cultural heritage. One of these customs is the traditional way of celebrating Christ-mas, the Birth of Christ. It is usual to begin this festivity with the Christmas Eve Supper consisting of twelve meatless dishes. During this season Christmas Carols (Kolyady) are sung.

This record contains both sacred and secular selections. One of the strictly sacred carols is "Dyvnaya Novyna". An ancient secular selection, "Svyati Sydily", has become a Christmas carol through custom/tradition. "V poli, v poli pluzhok Ore" refers to peasant life. Still other carols are representative of the different provinces/regions of the Ukraine, for example — from the Hutsul region — "V Vifleyemi Hradi". Related to the Feast of Jordan - Epiphany is "Na Ordanskey Richtsi" and "Oy, tam za Horoyu".

CHRISTMAS IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
This is what you hear each year said by many people, we the Singing Semchuk Sisters hope that this Album will remind you of Christmas as you once knew it to be, and if listening to us has brought you but a moment of pleasure, we would appreciate knowing this. We therefore ask you to write to us in English or Ukrainian and tell us what you like or dislike about this album, or our other Albums, after all it was you who made our records possible, and if we failed to satisfy you in any way, well, we are still young and have time to learn, we can only try harder the next time. We now take this opportunity to extend to you and yours a Merry Christmas and a happy new year, and hope that through our carols we have conveyed a message of Christmas as you once knew it to be.
Address all correspondence to the Singing Semchuk Sisters, care of GALAXY RECORDS, Winnipeg, Canada.
TRADITIONAL UKRAINIAN CAROLS is what this album is all about, you will hear these young ladies harmonize in their own style Christmas Carols of true Ukrainian origin, we say ladies, because since their first records they have grown up now, and if you detect any changes over their other records, we believe that this is part of the girls growing up.
Recording sessions are usually long and require a lot of hard work, these young ladies stand up well under the strain, they have been as much a pleasure to work with, as they are listening to.

This record is a product of the combined efforts of the directors, Rev. Boniface V. Sloboda O.S.B.M., Mr. William L. Smigel B. Mus. and St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Choir.
The Choir was first organized in 1940 by the Rev. Theodosius Dobko O.S.B.M. From its original membership of fifteen, the choir has grown to its present number of seventy-five members.
During the time of its existence, the choir has constantly contributed to the promotion of the Ukrainian cultural life in British Columbia through performances in many ethnic concerts, radio broadcasts, and parish functions.
It is felt that this recording of traditional carols, sung simply, en masse, would be enjoyed by Ukrainian families during the Yule season.

BONIFACE V. SLOBODA, OSBM Father Sloboda, OSBM, needs no introduction to our listening audience. A former student of the late Dr. Alexander Koshetz, he has distinguished himself in directing children's, mixed and male choirs for the past 35 years. His appearances on radio and television have won him acclaim as one of the leading exponents of the Ukrainian liturgical and folk music in Canada.

WILLIAM L. SMIGEL William L. Smigel, although young in years, has amassed many musical credits, including concerts, radio broadcasts and appearances at national and ethnic festivals. His initial interest in choral singing was fostered by Rev. Boniface V. Sloboda, OSBM, who encouraged him to embark on a musical career. He graduated from the U.B.C. Department of Music in 1966 and has been conducting St. Mary's choir since 1964.

We endeavoured to achieve the original sound in startling definition with our Quadrosonic STEREO recording process. You will enjoy a fuller depth and brilliance and a sense of intimacy with these vocal portions. No matter what your playback equipment the quality of this record will give you the finest full frequency reproduction obtainable today. This album has been recorded expressly for stereophonic performance.
