History The Ukrainian Catholic Women's League Chorus was first organized in 1960. This chorus has made many appearances on different occasions as part of its aim to preserve Ukrainian customs, traditions and cultural heritage. One of these customs is the traditional way of celebrating Christ-mas, the Birth of Christ. It is usual to begin this festivity with the Christmas Eve Supper consisting of twelve meatless dishes. During this season Christmas Carols (Kolyady) are sung.
This record contains both sacred and secular selections. One of the strictly sacred carols is "Dyvnaya Novyna". An ancient secular selection, "Svyati Sydily", has become a Christmas carol through custom/tradition. "V poli, v poli pluzhok Ore" refers to peasant life. Still other carols are representative of the different provinces/regions of the Ukraine, for example — from the Hutsul region — "V Vifleyemi Hradi". Related to the Feast of Jordan - Epiphany is "Na Ordanskey Richtsi" and "Oy, tam za Horoyu".
