Rock is finely free in Ukraine.
This is the first record of Ukrainian rock music from Ukraine. So, was rock ever not free?
Two years ago, such a recording would have been impossible, because the scissors of
government censorship were still working overtime, cutting out everything that did not
conform to officially "recommended" cliches. The appearance of this record mirrors both
the relaxing of state pressure and the irrepressible growth of the Ukrainian music scene.
If Western rock and roll is a mature sophisticated forty-year old man who is still trying to
look young, Ukrainian rock is a teenager growing in an aggressive environment. And as
with all rockers, the aggressive mask hides the face of a child.
The influence of the Western music is strong, but Ukrainian rock emerged from very
different realities and problems. It also fit Ukrainian traditional forms into new contexts. In
spite of the music's youth, however, some groups are already considered "old* and "new",
"classics" and "decadents."
The festival "Chervona Ruta" took place in Chernivtsi (a city in western Ukraine), in
September of 1989. This record offers a selection of works by a few of the many groups
who took part.
