Ukrainian Christams
The Ivan Romanoff Male Chorus and Orchestra With Lesia Zubrack Soloist
The artistry of Ivan Romanoff continues to be recognized around the world.  In addition to his popular CBC radio show "Continental Rhapsody", Ivan has won countless followers through concerts and his recordings.  His albums have been released in the United States, Japan and Europe.  Here again the Ivan Romanoff Male Chorus takes you on a musical journey - in the celebrated Romanoff style we present a unique Christmas album...

Ever since that first Christmas, poets, musicians, artists and ordinary folk have enriched, through story and song, the miraculous events of that night of nights, when animals were said to kneel.. the heavens shone with a glorious light, and joy enfolded people everywhere.  Today, we gather with those we love, exchange gifts, and reflect on this holiday of reverence and harmony.
For Ukrainians all over the world, many of whom celebrate on January sixth, according to the Julian calendar, Christmas Eve is a night that transcends earthy trouble and anxiety.  Houses glow with soft lights and worm baking smells.  Tables are spread with sweet hay and coveted over with white, embroidered cloths.  On the table sits the "Kolach" - a huge braided loaf of bread with a honey-gold crust, dusted with poppy seeds.  Carollers come in, stamping snow from their boots; the men remove their fur caps, and without ceremony, everyone stands in a half-circle.  You hear the faint note of a pitch pipe.. and they begin the "Kolyada".. the Christmas carol.

  1. Thank you Stari. My grandmother was so moved to hear music from this album she was brought to tears. She grew up on a farm outside of Winnipeg, the daughter of two Ukranian immigrants, and this music brought her back to those times.

  2. I recorded this LP to tape from the Winnipeg Library. It was always a treasure finding more Romanoff recordings. I'm building his discography at 45worlds.com.
Will welcome more browsing here and maybe hearing from you.
