Fragment

The Jerusalem Mattins is a service of the Eastern Rite Church celebrated on Good Friday with great majesty and solemnity. While the service symbolically takes place over the tomb of Christ, the tone is not one of mourning and grief, but rather one of faith and hope, for in it we reflect upon the meaning and purpose of Christ's suffering, mankind's redemption and salvation.
In Ukraine the singing of the Jerusalem Mattins was done mainly by cantors or monastic choirs, and only at times by the congregation. Although the form and content of the service is Greek and the language Old Church Slavonic, the service by tradition is Ukrainian. The music is based on old chants from Western Ukraine with perhaps references to synagogal motives of Old Jerusalem, hence the name Jerusalem Mattins. The style of this particular work, composed by Myron Fedoriv is conventional "a la barocco", the form is "Quasi oratorio".
Musicus Bortnianskii is a non-profit performing arts organization founded in 1981, whose goal is to research and perorm music of Ukrainian classical composers, primarily that of Dymytrii Bornianskii (1751-1825) in order that he may take his rightful place in the history of music. At the same time Musicus Bortnianskii wishes to develop an appreciation for choral music in general.
Myron Fedoriv, a Ukrainian musicologist, composer and arranger of both secular and sacred music, began his studies at the Warsaw National Conservatory. He also studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the University of Vienna. Myron Fedoriv presently makes his home in Philadelphia.
Among Myron Fedoriv's numerous publications are the following religious works: The Jerusalem Mattins, The Easter Mattins, a volume on liturgical music, two books of religious hymns for choir, piano music and solos. Hi is the author of a larger work both in Ukrainian and English on Liturgica;l chants of Western Ukraine from the earliest periods of its history. He is also the arranger of almost all the liturgical chants of Transcarpathian Ukraine, and the composer and arranger of several masses.
Myron Maksymiw, founder and Music Director of Musicus Bornianskii, graduated from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music conducting program. His academic credentials also include a Master's Degree in Slavic Languages and Literature from the same university, and several years of study in Italy.
This recording is the first of a series of recordings by Musicus Bornianskii planned to commemorate the Millennium of Chrisianity in Ukraine in 1988.
